Bandgap tuning in kerfed metastrips under extreme deformation

چکیده
The process of kerfing enables planar structures with the ability to undergo dramatic out-of-plane deformation in response static loads. Starting from flat and stiff sheets, allows for formation a wide variety unconventional free-form shapes, making especially attractive architectural applications. In this work, we investigate numerically experimentally bandgap behavior densely cut kerfed strips. Our study reveals rich landscape bandgaps that is predominantly ascribable activation resonant sub-units within kerf unit cells. We also document how extreme deformability strips under twisting bending loads, enhanced by meandering pattern, can serve as tuning mechanism.

Phase Transformation in Tantalum under Extreme Laser Deformation
The structural and mechanical response of metals is intimately connected to phase transformations. For instance, the product of a phase transformation (martensite) is responsible for the extraordinary range of strength and toughness of steel, making it a versatile and important structural material. Although abundant in metals and alloys, the discovery of new phase transformations is not current...
متن کاملMechanics of stretchable electronics on balloon catheter under extreme deformation
Stretchable electronics has been applied to balloon catheters for high-efficacy ablation, with tactile sensing integrated on the surface, to establish full and conformal contact with the endocardial surface for elimination of the heart sink caused by blood flow around their surfaces. The balloon of the catheter folds into uniform ‘clover’ patterns driven by the pressure mismatch inside ( vacuum...
متن کاملEmergence of stable interfaces under extreme plastic deformation.
Atomically ordered bimetal interfaces typically develop in near-equilibrium epitaxial growth (bottom-up processing) of nanolayered composite films and have been considered responsible for a number of intriguing material properties. Here, we discover that interfaces of such atomic level order can also emerge ubiquitously in large-scale layered nanocomposites fabricated by extreme strain (top dow...
متن کاملDynamic Failure of a Lamina Meshwork in Cell Nuclei under Extreme Mechanical Deformation
The nuclear lamina is a structural protein meshwork at the inner nuclear membrane. It confers mechanical strength to the cell’s nucleus and also sustains the overall structural integrity of the cell. The rupture of nuclear lamina is involved in many physiologically extreme conditions, such as cell division, genetic disease, and injury. Yet, its rupture mechanisms and processes are largely unkno...
متن کاملThermal tuning of silicon-based one-dimensional photonic bandgap structures
Thermal tuning of silicon-based one-dimensional photonic bandgap microcavities is demonstrated. Thermally induced spectral shifts are caused by both the host silicon matrix and the optically active material infiltrated inside the photonic bandgap structures. The active material leads to the dominant thermal tuning contribution but the effect of the silicon matrix cannot be neglected. The intera...
